Getting rid of hiccups

There are so many articles about how to get rid of hiccups. Well, I’m going to put in my two cents. I’ve learned recently that hiccups are caused by spasms in the diaphragm.

I used to try a bunch of the “remedies” just like everyone else. Until recently, when I decided to try something new. The new technique has worked for me 2/2 times in the last year; and it has worked for my friend 1/1 times in the last 6 months. I know there aren’t that many data points, but I figured I’d share anyways.

Here’s what I do

  1. Stand up straight (optional)
  2. Take a slow, deep breath into your belly
    • It’s important to use the diaphragmaic breathing technique (seen here) to ensure that you are stretching your diaphragm as you take the deep breath
  3. Slowly and consistently exhale the air through pressed lips. Take 15 - 20 seconds to fully exhale.
